Pension Schemes in India
Pension schemes give you a regular income after retirement or in old age. India has schemes for government employees, private sector workers, unorganised workers and senior citizens. This page explains the main ones and where to apply on the official site.
Main Options
National Pension System (NPS)
A voluntary retirement savings scheme open to Indian citizens. You invest during your working years and get a pension and a lump sum after retirement. It is regulated by PFRDA.
Atal Pension Yojana (APY)
A pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector, mainly for ages 18 to 40. You choose a fixed monthly pension from the plan options and pay a monthly contribution through your bank account.
PM Shram Yogi Maandhan
A pension scheme for unorganised workers with a low monthly income, such as domestic workers, drivers and street vendors. It gives a fixed monthly pension after age 60.
EPF and EPS (EPFO)
Salaried employees in covered organisations contribute to the Employees Provident Fund. Part of the employer share goes to the Employees Pension Scheme, which pays a monthly pension after retirement.
Old Age Pension (NSAP)
The National Social Assistance Programme supports older people, widows and persons with disability from low income families. It is paid through state governments, so the amount and rules differ by state.
